Women in Tourism: Celebrating KwaZulu-Natal’s Leading Ladies

Across KwaZulu-Natal, women are shaping the future of tourism. They are running game lodges, building tour companies, mentoring young talent, and creating cultural experiences that connect travellers with the soul of the province. Their work enriches local economies, protects heritage, and welcomes the world to explore KwaZulu-Natal through an authentic, community-driven lens. This Women’s Month, we celebrate the innovators, entrepreneurs, and storytellers who are not just part of the tourism industry. They are redefining it.

A Sector Shaped by Women

In South Africa, women make up a significant share of the tourism workforce. Yet for many years, leadership and ownership opportunities were out of reach. That is beginning to change. The Women in Tourism (WiT) programme, launched by the Department of Tourism in 2013, is helping women move beyond the margins. Through mentorship, training, networking, and support, the programme empowers women to turn small ideas into sustainable ventures. In KwaZulu-Natal, it has helped women grow businesses, formalise services, and gain exposure at major industry events like Africa’s Travel Indaba. Women are no longer waiting to be included. They are stepping up, claiming space, and creating change.

Rising Above the Obstacles

While access to finance, infrastructure, and market visibility still present challenges — especially in rural areas — many women are finding ways to overcome them. From self-funded startups to collective partnerships, women are building businesses with resourcefulness and resilience. They are not just surviving in the sector. They are thriving, inspiring others, and opening doors for the next generation.

Why Women in Tourism Matter

When women succeed in tourism, the benefits ripple outward. Women-led tourism businesses are more likely to employ other women, reinvest in families and communities, and promote responsible travel practices. They often act as custodians of heritage, sharing stories and experiences that connect visitors to the spirit of KwaZulu-Natal. They also bring fresh ideas and collaborative approaches that challenge outdated industry norms. Whether launching a luxury lodge or guiding township tours, women are expanding what tourism can be.
