KwaZulu-Natal Film Month: Building an Industry, Supporting a Vision

Film Month in KwaZulu-Natal is a focused opportunity to highlight the province’s investment in local film. KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film drives sector development through structured funding, skills support, and market access. July brings this work into public focus, aligning with three major events: the Durban International Film Festival, Durban FilmMart, and the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards.   These events present the scale and ambition of KwaZulu-Natal’s film efforts and demonstrate how the province contributes to the national and continental creative economy.

Film Industry Support in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal has built a reputation as a viable filming location in South Africa. The province offers varied urban and natural locations, a growing talent base, and active institutional support. The KwaZulu-Natal film office plays a role in coordinating permits, promoting locations, and supporting logistics for productions of different sizes.   KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film provides financial assistance across development, production, and post-production phases. Funding is available to both emerging and established producers through formal application processes. Capacity-building initiatives are run in partnership with national organisations, training providers, and sector bodies.   Workshops, mentoring, and production readiness support help ensure that participants are equipped to meet market and production standards. These efforts aim to create sustainable industry participation beyond a single production cycle.

Durban International Film Festival

17 – 27 July 2025 ccadiff.ukzn.ac.za   The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is a leading African film event. Hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, DIFF has run annually since 1979.   The 2025 programme includes screenings of feature films, documentaries, and short films. The festival also hosts panel discussions, filmmaker talks, and outreach events across Durban. African stories and independent cinema receive specific focus, with screening venues including cinemas, museums, and public locations.   KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film supports DIFF as part of its cultural and audience development strategy. The festival gives visibility to regional talent while creating opportunities for emerging creatives to engage with local and international peers.

Durban FilmMart

18 – 22 July 2025 durbanfilmmart.co.za   Durban FilmMart (DFM) is the continent’s leading co-production and finance market for African content. Established through a partnership between DIFF and the Durban Film Office, DFM became an independent non-profit institute in 2020.   DFM connects producers with decision-makers, funders, distributors, and broadcasters. The event includes pitch sessions, project incubation, masterclasses, and one-on-one market meetings. Delegates can present projects, receive feedback, and access structured support to improve market readiness.   Beyond the event, DFM runs year-round programmes for project teams. These include development labs, talent residencies, and targeted mentorship. Particular attention is paid to improving access for underrepresented creators and linking projects to international opportunities.

Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards

19 July 2025 Durban ICC kznfilm.co.za   The Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards were introduced in 2013 to recognise excellence in KwaZulu-Natal’s film and television industry. Named after one of South Africa’s first recognised Black film directors and actors, the awards reflect the province’s intent to grow a respected creative sector.   Awards are given across multiple fields including acting, directing, writing, and technical roles. Categories also recognise new talent, youth participation, and outstanding contributions by KwaZulu-Natal-based professionals.   The event is delivered in partnership with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film. It plays a role in raising the standard and visibility of work created in the province.   Set under the theme, “Africa’s Champions of Storytelling; From Piers to Pages”, the 2025 edition celebrates the journey of storytelling – how local narratives, rooted in history and heritage, are transformed into global cinematic masterpieces.

Year-Round Impact and Industry Integration

KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film supports the industry beyond July. The organisation runs and funds training programmes in screenwriting, production management, editing, animation, and more. Several graduates of these initiatives have gone on to produce short films, secure industry roles, or qualify for funding through national bodies.   KwaZulu-Natal participates in national and African networks that support content distribution. These partnerships ensure that local films are positioned for export, festival participation, and international collaboration.   The province’s continued support for location marketing, skills development, and infrastructure expansion reflects its intention to maintain long-term industry growth.

Film Month Participation and Access

Film Month invites participation from both the public and industry stakeholders. Screenings, exhibitions, seminars, and public events are scheduled throughout July. Students, professionals, and community organisations are encouraged to attend, collaborate, and explore the resources on offer.   For more information on film development in KwaZulu-Natal, funding programmes, and the full Film Month calendar, visit www.visitkznsa.com
