Celebrating Inspiring Women in Tourism: Nolwazi Moepeng of El Sali Guest House

As we approach Women’s Month, it is a time to honour and celebrate the incredible contributions of women across various industries. The tourism sector, in particular, has seen remarkable leadership and innovation from women who are passionate about providing unforgettable experiences for travellers. One such inspiring figure is Nolwazi Moepeng, the owner of El Sali Guest House, formerly known as Abbot’s Cove BnB, located in the picturesque town of Hilton, Pietermaritzburg.

Nolwazi Moepeng’s journey in the tourism industry is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and passion. Being profiled by the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTAFA) as one of the women in tourism for Women’s Month is a humbling and exciting opportunity for her. It underscores her commitment to excellence and her significant contributions to the sector.

El Sali Guest House is nestled in the heart of Hilton and offers seven self-contained rooms, each individually styled to suit the unique tastes of their guests. The establishment maintains a charming country/farm feel, making it a preferred choice for both local and international visitors, whether they are travelling for work or leisure.

“We are proud to participate in this industry which is not easy but fulfilling,” says Nolwazi. “One is daily in contact with people and ensuring a good customer experience from the first enquiry to when we receive our guests. Our goal is to ensure that we offer a great experience in the peaceful and misty Hilton village.”

Running a successful guest house involves more than just welcoming guests. It requires extensive planning, restructuring, and strategy reviews. Nolwazi emphasises the importance of understanding the seasons, identifying customer needs, and continuously improving the offerings.

“As a woman in this industry, the hard work that goes in running a tourism business is underestimated, but I would change any of my experiences. I love the opportunities to collaborate with other women in tourism as it ensures that we grow together through ideas and seeking opportunities,” she adds.

Nolwazi’s hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. She has been recognised as one of the top 5 Nedbank Women in Tourism in KZN and gained valuable exposure to the Zambia tourism market in 2023. She also participated in the prestigious Tourism Indaba 2023/2024.

“These experiences have added so much value and broadened my scope of the industry. I believe that as a woman, I can do more,” she shares. Nolwazi is committed to diversifying her offerings, mentoring other up-and-coming women in the industry, and contributing to the growth of the tourism value chain.

Nolwazi Moepeng’s story is one of inspiration and empowerment. Her journey highlights the importance of perseverance, innovation, and collaboration in the tourism industry. As we celebrate Women’s Month, we salute Nolwazi and all the incredible women who are making a difference in tourism, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.

El Sali Guest House stands as a beacon of hospitality and excellence, and under Nolwazi’s leadership, it continues to thrive and create memorable experiences for all its guests.
