KZN’s south coast,<\/strong> with its string of small village, from Port Edward<\/strong> in the south to Amanzimtoti<\/strong> in the north, and its pretty beaches<\/strong> and warm sea, has always been one of South Africa’s favourite year-round holiday destinations. As you drive southwards from Durban, passing popular towns is a delight. You pass towns such as Umkomaas, Scottborough, Port Shepstone, Margate<\/strong> and Port Edward on the beautiful Umtamvuna River<\/strong> bordering the Eastern Cape<\/strong>, through sub-tropical forests, rolling hills of sugar cane<\/strong>, banana<\/strong> plantations, orchards of nuts,<\/strong> blue lagoons and golden beaches with rocky coves.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

<\/p>\n

Many of the South Coast’s activities revolve around the ocean, so go on a licensed boat-based whale and dolphin watching<\/strong> trip, or you can snorkel and scuba dive<\/strong>, surf<\/strong>, swim and catch fish,<\/strong> or just lie on the beach and enjoy watching others do so.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Aliwal Shoal<\/strong> off Umkomaas and Scottborough, and more especially the Protea Banks<\/strong> off Shelley Beach, <\/strong>are rated as some of the top shark diving sites in the world. Diving with ragged tooth sharks<\/strong> is extremely popular, as is the cage diving<\/strong> option for the less experienced.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, beach-related activities are not all there is to enjoy. If you’re a thrill seeker, inland from Port Shepstone<\/strong> is the beautiful 27 kilometre, 400m deep Oribi Gorge<\/strong> that is great for walks, hikes<\/strong>, and exploring the waterfalls<\/strong> and spectacular views<\/strong>. This is also the site of the world’s highest natural commercial abseil<\/strong>, the world’s highest bungee <\/strong>swing –\u00a0an adrenaline rush from the top of Lehr’s Falls<\/strong> into the gorge\u00a0– a Wild Slide across the gorge, white water rafting<\/strong>, mountain biking<\/strong> and a suspension bridge<\/strong> to sway across a ravine.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

For those who enjoy the outdoors, but in a less ”energetic” way, KZN’s sub-tropical vegetation and numerous small nature reserves,<\/strong> such as Umtamvuna and Vernon Crooks,<\/strong> provide some wonderful opportunities to watch birds\u00a0– there are more than 400 species\u00a0– and to wander along paths of beautiful floral diversity.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A lovely and rather unique experience is to walk along the beach with a guide at low tide and see some of the most amazing protected marine fossils<\/strong> within the Mpenjati Nature Reserve on the lower south coast.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The South Coast has long been known as South Africa’s ‘Golf Coast’, and there are eight excellent 18-hole golf <\/strong>courses, two of which are rated amongst the top 30 in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Being as popular a holiday destination as it is, the South Coast also has a variety of <\/span>accommodation<\/strong> ranging from up-market hotels, middle market guest houses and B&Bs, self-catering units and caravan and <\/span>camping<\/strong> facilities, as well as all the commercial amenities such as <\/span>shopping<\/strong> malls, movie theatres, and even an <\/span>ice rink<\/strong> at the <\/span>Galleria Mall<\/strong> in Amanzimtoti.<\/span><\/p>\n
