As one heads north up the coast out of Durban towards Mozambique, the big N2 freeway bypasses some of the prettiest beaches in KwaZulu-Natal. So, it is worth taking the smaller coastal roads, such as the M4, past Sibaya Casino<\/strong>, Umdloti, King Shaka International Airport<\/strong> and the beautiful upmarket Zimbali<\/strong> estate and golf course.<\/strong> This is where you will find the small holiday towns of Ballito,<\/strong> Salt Rock<\/strong>, Umhlali<\/strong>, Tinley Manor<\/strong>, and Zinkwazi,<\/strong> before making your way back onto the freeway and across the enormous John Ross Bridge<\/strong> to the Tugela Mouth<\/strong> where KZN’s biggest river, the mighty Tugela<\/strong>, gushes out into the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two great South African leaders had their homes in this region and today lie buried here. King Shaka Zulu<\/strong> is buried near the town of Stanger<\/strong>, also known as KwaDukuza, <\/strong>and Chief Albert Luthuli<\/strong> is buried nearby. Albert Luthuli was the first, and one of three South Africans to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize<\/strong>, the other two being Mr Nelson Mandela,<\/strong> and Mr FW de Klerk<\/strong> who were jointly awarded the prize. <\/strong>The Luthuli Museum <\/strong>near Groutville <\/strong>provides interesting information about the life of the great South African leader, Albert Luthuli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large Indian<\/strong> community is settled on KZN’s North Coast, enlivening the area with beautiful temples<\/strong>, lush market gardens and farms, numerous fresh produce markets<\/strong> and delicious, spicy Indian cuisine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The North Coast has always been popular with anglers<\/strong> because the fishing<\/strong> is so good. This may be due to the many sheltered lagoons<\/strong> which open into the Indian Ocean and which serve as nurseries for small fish and other sea creatures. The area is also known for its good surf <\/strong>and the internationally recognized Mr Price Pro-<\/strong>surfing contest, which draws competitors from all over the world, is held in Ballito <\/strong>annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little inland from the Zulu hilltop homestead-themed Sibaya Casino is the small village of Mount Moreland. <\/strong>Here, a viewing site has been established for the public to come and observe an estimated 3 million barn swallows<\/strong> (some 13% of the world’s population) which make their way to this wetland<\/strong> to roost between November and April annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the domestic holiday season and long-weekends, many of these places are quiet and peaceful. However, during the seasonal influx of vacationers, the many holiday homes, excellent restaurants<\/strong> and nightclubs<\/strong> fill up, as do the family experiences such as beach days, kiddies’ animal farms<\/strong> and the crocodile farm<\/strong>. Many visitors enjoy taking a break on mountain bike trails<\/strong> through the sugar cane fields and forests,<\/strong> or with a few rounds of golf<\/strong> at one of the many excellent North Coast golf courses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
