Zip-lining, skydiving, rock-climbing, white-water rafting, abseiling, bungee-jumping: it\u2019s\r\na case of \u2018have the gear, do the jump\u2019.<br><br>\u201cWomen, especially black women, are feeling more empowered,\u201d believes psychologist Sharon\r\nMunyaka. \u201cWomen have a world of possibility through their access to education, their participation\r\nin the economy and the fact that adventure excursions have become more accessible. I have found more and more\r\nwomen want to experience nature, want adventure.\u201d<br><br> \r\nJournalist Cebo Bhengu is another adventure addict. \u201cI love new spaces, new experiences, new\r\nconversations,\u201d she says, conceding that her profession makes her naturally curious and\r\nadventurous. \u201cI love exploring, being in beautiful settings, swimming under waterfalls. I love the\r\nbeach and the ocean.\u201d<br><br>\u201cSince COVID, we have seen an exponential growth in this market,\u201d says Siphelele Luthuli,\r\nmarketing head at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and influencer (#CertifiedEcoTourismDoyenne). \u201cBut\r\nthere is an additional component. Women want adventure, yes, but they also want luxury. So, they\r\nwill book a glamping experience where they can stay in a luxury tent and enjoy gourmet dinners\r\nwhile spending their days hiking and exploring.<br><br>\u201cA while ago, we ran a campaign called \u2018Girls Gone Wild\u2019,\u201d she continues, \u201cWe promoted the idea of\r\ntravel, luxury, wildlife adventure, gourmet food and enjoyment of nature \u2013 dining under the stars after\r\na gruelling day of activity. We also threw in the idea of wellness and beauty. These things all\r\ncomplement each other.\u201d<br><br>\r\n<strong>Feeling the freedom<\/strong> <br><br>, ever the psychologist, feels that many women are looking for more meaning in life. \u201cPerhaps\r\npeople feel that their lives are a little humdrum, maybe a little bit empty. Women are not waiting for\r\ntheir men, they are talking to each other more easily, they post their adventures on social media,\r\nthey encourage each other to try new things. They go on these adventures with their friends \u2013 and\r\nit is a great way to bond with your kids,\u201d she points out.<br><br>\r\n\u201cIt is so liberating,\u201d adds Thobeka. \u201cIt gives you a feeling of absolute freedom. At work we are\r\nexpected to look a certain way, behave a certain way. I love to bring other people in. They see\r\nanother black person doing this and they realise they can do this too. When I take my friends hiking, \r\nthey see the backpack and they say: \u2018I can\u2019t do this\u2019. Adventure is life-affirming. This is true whether\r\nyou are combatting the elements or admiring natural beauty.\u201d<br><br>KwaZulu-Natal has the most diverse adventure offerings. The Drakensberg is the premier destination\r\nfor hiking, with 1 700 kms of trails. The Tugela and Umkomaas rivers offer unrivalled white-water\r\nrafting. Along the coast, one can do scuba diving, shark-cage diving, snorkelling, surfing, kayaking\r\nand windsurfing. The Big Five game reserves feature guided walking safaris.<br><br>\r\n\u201cYou just have to do it,\u201d Cebo says. \u201cYou only live once. You must immerse yourself in new spaces,\r\nget new experiences, get the flavours of life, the colours of life. If you are new to this, start small,\r\nslowly. Maybe try something local. There are many options. Adventure tourism is safe, you will be\r\nin good hands.\u201d<br><br> \u201cIt is not only the activity,\u201d Sharon says, \u201cit is also the research and the planning and the anticipation.\r\nTalk to your friends, build up your risk appetite. Try a few different things, look for groups to join. Just\r\nto give you an idea&#8230;.
