It was the Second Anglo-Boer War and by January 1900, the British General Buller had failed in his two previous attempts at relieving the then Boer-besieged town of Ladysmith. On his third attempt, the Lancastiran brigade launched an attack against the Boers on the summit of Spion Kop, which ultimately resulted in a total defeat and would prove to be one of the most futile and notable battles of the war.\n\nOf note is that \u2018The Kop\u2019, one end of Liverpool Football Club\u2019s Anfield home ground takes its name from the number of Lancastiran soldiers that lost their lives here.\n\n&nbsp;\n\nGPS COORDINATES: S28\u00b0 38.983\u2019 E29\u00b0 30.998\u2019\n\nADMISSION FEE: NO CHARGE\n\n&nbsp;\n<ol start=\"2\">\n \t<li>\n<h2><strong>THE MIDLANDS MEANDER<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nStarted in 1985 by four potters, a weaver and a handful of artists as an art and crafts route, the Midlands Meander has grown to include more than 150 weavers, woodworkers, potters and ceramists, metal workers, cheese makers, beer brewers and well, many more. The Meander now extends from Mooi River through Rosetta and Kamberg, Balgowan, Lidgetton, Lions River and The Dargle coming to an end near Midmar Dam. There\u2019s no shortage of activities in Notties and among the \u2018must-stops\u2019 (for everyone EXCEPT the driver) is the Nottingham Road Brewing Company. Other activities include fly-fishing, a stop at one of the local spas, breakfast, lunch or dinner at any one of the town\u2019s superb eateries or even art or craft course and let\u2019s not forget Notties great shops!\n\n&nbsp;\n\nJust a little further down the road, you\u2019ll find Fort Nottingham, a teeny tiny farming village with a handful of houses.\n\n&nbsp;\n\nGPS COORDINATES NOTTINGHAM ROAD: 29.3558\u00b0S, 38.983\u201929.9993\u00b0 E\n\nGPS COORDINATES FORT NOTTINGHAM: 29\u00b024\u201952.2252\u201dS 29\u00b054\u2019 48.0096\u201d E\n\nADMISSION FEE: NO CHARGE\n\n&nbsp;\n<ol start=\"4\">\n \t<li>\n<h2><strong>MANDELA CAPTURE MONUMENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\nOn the night of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> of August 1962, Nelson Mandela was travelling with his comrade Cecil Williams along the R102 that runs parallel to the N3 freeway en route to Johannesburg. At a spot just before the road dips down into a bend, one of three South African Police cars that had been trailing behind them overtook before slowing down and indicating for them to stop.\n\nAs Nelson Mandela wrote in his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom \u2013 <em>\u2018I knew in that moment that my life on the run was over, my 17 months of \u2018freedom\u2019 were about to end\u2019. <\/em>\n\n<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\nToday, you can now visit the Mandela Capture Monument and take in the stillness of the location and Museum. Perhaps one of the highlights of the Monument is the sculpture by Marco Cianfanelli erected from 50 steel rods in varying lengths and that when seen from a certain angle portrays Mandela. Here, the uMgeni River tumbles spectacularly 95 meters down into the large pool at its base.\n\n&nbsp;\n\nThere are three different trails around the falls allowing sightseers to get closer to this awe-inspiring (and quite often deafening depending on your proximity) attraction. There\u2019s also 4X4 Safari Game Drives to Hiking Trails, Segway Tours and a Reptile Park with crocodiles, snakes and tortoises.
