The Durban Botanic Garden is regarded by many as one of South Africa’s most beautiful botanical garden. It is filled with thick vegetation in which very tall trees predominate. In 1850s the arrival of the original curator, Mr. mark Johnson Mc Ken, who was responsible for the vast collection of specimens introduced into the garden, making it what it is today. Specialities include the Earnest Thorpe orchid house, a herb garden, a sunken garden and the garden for the blind. There is an information centre and a tea garden. Entrance is free. The Kwazulu-Natal philharmonic orchestra performs at the botanic gardenslake on various Sundays throughout the year. Audiences are welcome to bring along a picnic basket and enjoy the splendour of music in one of Durbans most picturesque locations. There is a cover charge for these events. Opening hours: 7:30am- 5:15pm and from 16 September to 15 April they are open until 5:45pm.
