Overview

Christa Biyela is a distinguished writer and producer with a rich background in drama and performance. She graduated with a Speech and Drama Diploma from Durban University of Technology (formerly Natal Technikon). She furthered her education by earning a BA Hons degree, specializing in Drama and Performance, from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Christa began her career at SABC in Durban, where she served as a Technical Producer and was featured as a radio drama actor. Her passion for storytelling led her to transition into writing in 1993, during which she crafted and evaluated numerous radio dramas for Ukhozi FM. Her exceptional talent propelled her to the role of head writer for Ukhozi FM's pioneering soap opera, KUSA KUSA.
Expanding her expertise, Christa attended the NFVF Spark training program, which marked her foray into screenwriting. She currently develops storylines for ITHONGA and has contributed to acclaimed television series such as OUTLAWS, SAVAGE BEAUTY, THE RIVER, THE QUEEN, UNMARRIED, THE REPUBLIC, THE IMPOSTER, and IGAZI, to name a few. Her outstanding work in scriptwriting was recognized with a SAFTA Award for Best Achievement in Scriptwriting - Telenovela, underscoring her excellence and impact in the industry.
In addition to her writing accomplishments, Christa is a dedicated mentor and educator. She has facilitated scriptwriting workshops for the drama department at Ukhozi FM, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts, KCAP, and the Drama Department at Durban University of Technology. Her experience also includes producing and co-writing for the first Ukhozi FM sitcom, SIPHILA KAYI 1, and creating, producing, and co-hosting the weekly talk show SIHLOMULELANA NGOLWAZI for Ukhozi FM.
Christa serves as an External Moderator for AFDA in Scriptwriting and for Drama & Production Studies Scriptwriting at Durban University of Technology (DUT). She is also the author of the motivational book, Getting Dirty: Sex is GREAT but Let’s Be Honest. Her insights and expertise have been featured on SABC 2's Morning Live, Lifestyle with Dumi on 1KZN TV, Isolezwe, Move, DRUM Magazine, and the Natal Mercury.
